Nokia teams up with Apple

Nokia has announced that it will roll out a new browser for its mobile-phone handsets running on the Series 60 Platform. The browser will be based on open-source code and will be developed in conjunction with Apple. The Series 60 browser will use the same open-source components -- WebCore and JavaScriptCore -- that Apple uses on its popular Safari Internet browser for personal computers. The code is based on KHTML and KJS from KDE"s Konqueror open-source project.  So What? The introduction of open source to the mobile-phone browser world is not necessarily an earth-shattering development, what comes next could be. "A browser itself is a relatively standardized kind of software," Wang noted, adding that all browsers already have to operate using protocols such as HTTP. "The real question here is when they say they will base it on open source, does that mean you can develop third-party application software that will work with the browser?" Browser Tops User List The Web browser is the most important user interface on a mobile-phone handset besides the address book, contended Wang. And it will become more important as handsets are launched that use more than one wireless communication channel -- Wi-Fi and cellular, for example. Finding a phone number through a browser-based application, for instance, and then initiating that call through, could improve users" experience of a wireless phone significantly. "Browser-based applications have big potential," Wang said. "This will allow third parties to integrate their applications with this most-used interface; almost all data services onmobile phones use a browser." |
